Tisya Mukuna, a native of Kinshasa, Congo, has carved a unique path in the country’s agricultural landscape. Inspired by her father’s lifelong dedication to farming, she ventured into coffee cultivation, becoming a pioneer in the field.After completing her master’s degree in France, Mukuna returned to Congo with a vision to diversify her family’s agricultural pursuits. Despite facing initial skepticism from those who believed coffee was not suited to the Congolese climate, she persisted.
Today, she manages an impressive 8-hectare farm on a 20-hectare plot, employing a dedicated team of 6-8 permanent workers.Mukuna’s farm has not only generated employment opportunities for locals but has also become a source of income and livelihood for families in the surrounding villages. Her efforts have contributed to the revitalization of the local economy and have showcased the potential of coffee cultivation in Congo.
While infrastructure challenges such as poor road network and electricity have posed obstacles, Mukuna has remained steadfast in her commitment to her farm. Her approach to harvesting, which involves carefully selecting ripe red berries and allowing green and orange berries to mature, demonstrates her dedication to quality and sustainability.
Beyond her agricultural endeavors, Mukuna is a strong advocate for women’s empowerment. She encourages women to challenge traditional gender roles and pursue economic independence. Her own success story serves as an inspiration to women across Congo, demonstrating that they can excel in traditionally male-dominated fields.
