From Computing to Farming: Kereediste Miradu’s Inspiring Journey.

Kereediste Miradu, a young woman with a degree in Computing with Finance, has defied expectations and carved a successful path in agriculture. Driven by a prophetic vision and inspired by other female farmers, notably The ZedFarmer from Zambia, she founded October Farms, a thriving agricultural enterprise.

A Serendipitous Start

Miradu’s journey into farming began unexpectedly. A prophetic vision during her fourth year of university foretold a future surrounded by cabbages. Intrigued and inspired, she pursued agriculture after graduation, starting with a four-hectare maize field. Despite losing her mother during the harvest, Miradu found solace and purpose in her agricultural endeavors, determined to make her mother proud.

Expanding October Farms

Over the past two years, October Farms has grown significantly, encompassing husbandry, horticulture, and cattle farming. Miradu’s passion for agriculture is evident in her enthusiasm and the joy she finds in her work. Her dedication has led her to become a prominent figure in the industry, even meeting the Agricultural Minister of Botswana.

Government Support and Challenges

The government of Botswana has played a crucial role in supporting Miradu’s venture. They provide various incentives, including free ploughing services, seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation. While water and irrigation remain challenges, the government offers 50-50 support for building boreholes. Despite facing stereotypes and gender-based challenges in a male-dominated industry, Miradu has persevered and proven that agriculture is a lucrative and rewarding field.

A Call for African Unity and Agricultural Empowerment

Miradu believes that Africa’s future lies in agriculture. She emphasizes the need for Africans to believe in their continent and themselves. By uniting and embracing agriculture, Africa can achieve food security, economic prosperity, and social development.

Kereediste Miradu’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and a belief in oneself. Her journey from computing to farming has not only inspired others but has also demonstrated the immense potential of agriculture in Africa. As she continues to expand October Farms and advocate for agricultural empowerment, Miradu is paving the way for a brighter future for her continent.
