Sweet T&T
A twin island made up of diverse people including the French, Patois, English, Portuguese, Asian and Africans making up one of the 6th regions of Africa.
Surrounded by these 4 oceans; North Caribbean sea, East Atlantic ocean, South Columbus Channel and West Gulf of Paria, Water Taxi is a popular means of transportation.
Before its discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1498, the Spanish mainly administered the islands. The earliest settlers and indigenes were believed to have been from actual Venezuela, north eastern of South America around 4000BC.
Sweet T&T was a Spanish colony until 1797 where the British took charge. It became a British colony for good in 1802 after series of wars over possession of the Island.
Slave Trade will make the region have the largest population of Africans. Even before slave trade, Abubakari II ,the younger brother of Mansa Musa, a great emperor went on a voyage with 200 ships some 200 years ago to the Caribbean. Some were believed to have settled in the region.
The indigenous people began to phase out, leading to the exportation of Africans to work as slaves on a sugarcane plantation in the region during the era of Slavery.
If slave trade succeeded in relocating Africans, one thing it failed at was to take their culture out of them. The women will hide seeds such as Okra, maize, rice watermelon etc. in their hairs as a means of survival and hopefully to feed on. With these ‘stolen seeds’, Africans expanded Agriculture from sugarcane to many other plantations.
The abolishment of slave trade in 1834 led to an influx of Indians and Chinese merchant hence the mixed culture in Trinidad. In 1889 both Islands were merged into a single crown colony and eventually in 1962, gained independence from the British colony.
